Travel Course Opportunities for Art Students

These unique opportunities can heighten education by broadening learning through experiential travel.

Summer 2021 (7/18-vii/24)

Experimental Sketchbooks: Time and Space to Create at Monson Arts, Maine with Rebecca Goodale and Lin Lisberger

Combined Course Sections - Students volition receive 3 credits in drawing or book arts.

Fine art 399 (Studio Elective, Drawing or Book Arts)

ART 499 (Capstone for Volume Arts Modest)

Students will receive iii credits in drawing or volume arts.

With attention to content and design, and some experimental techniques, each student will create a group of Artist'southward Books or Drawings about their time in Monson, actively responding to the visual world around them. While there, Maine creative person, Barbara Sullivan, will present a workshop on Fresco, and Russell Scholars Director, Lisa Hibl will present a lecture on Henry David Thoreau. Each educatee will travel with several blank artist's books, sketchbooks and rolls of newspaper that they have prepared for the journey. The drawings and artist'south books will exist developed during the week at Monson Arts. The concluding project will be an Artist's Book or finished drawing made after returning habitation.

Summer 2020 (7/19-7/26) Art 399/499/599, Experimental Sketchbooks: Time and Space to Create at Monson Arts was converted to an Online-Alive at-home Residency due to precautions for COVID-19.

Grade meetings were daily via Zoom at 9:00 am and again at 4:00 pm

With attention to content and design, and some experimental techniques, each pupil will create a group of Artist's Books or Drawings almost their one-calendar week studio intensive, actively responding to the visual world around them.  Each student will work with several bare creative person's books, sketchbooks and rolls of paper that they have prepared for the journey into their At-home-Residency. The drawings and artist's books will exist developed throughout the week. Students will piece of work at abode with daily morning time Zoom meetings and 5 afternoon Zoom critiques.  The last project will be an Artist's Book or finished drawing made during the calendar month of August.

At Home Studio

Summer 2019 (5/31-6/10) ART 399/599, Harvesting the Prototype travel course to Tuscany engaged students in the act of experiencing the globe around them by using a variety of drawing and volume arts techniques to observe, collect, and tape the sights and sensations of Spannocchia, the organic subcontract in Tuscany where students were in residence. The travel experience also included a day in Florence visiting museums and significant architecture, and a day trip to Siena and the Nikki de Saint Phalle Tarot Sculpture Garden.  Each student traveled with several blank artist's books or journals that they prepared for the journey.  Upon returning to Maine each student was required to complete either a large drawing or an Artist'south Book near the viii days in Italian republic.  Students were also required to produce and submit work done during the residency in Tuscany.

Spring Semester 2019 AED 299, Arts, Civilisation, and Education of Republic of iceland, was an innovative collaboration between USM and SMCC, to build bridges between students from Maine and Iceland with a focus on the arts, culture, and educational systems of Republic of iceland.  Students traveled to Iceland over Bound Break (iii/18-iii/24), spending time in Reykjavik, and surround areas exploring the art, culture and educational systems of Iceland.  Students were asked to: identify, draw, and analyze the cultural underpinnings of art and didactics in the N Atlantic; examine and sympathise the central pillars of both Icelandic and American schools (Literacy, Sustainability, Commonwealth and Human Rights, Equality, Health and Welfare, and Creativity); and critique and develop global competencies, while directly investigating and applying these new understandings in Iceland.

Summer 2018 (half-dozen/14-6/21) ART 399/599, Art in Maine, was a nine-solar day intensive drawing form with seven days spent at Schoodic Institute, at Acadia National Park, in Wintertime Harbor, Maine.  Students drew in nature, from nature, with natural materials, and with an assortment of media and materials non necessarily associated with traditional drawing.  Trips to Bar Harbor and the Abbe Museum, a museum of history and culture of the Wabanaki people were included, equally well every bit data provided about the history of landscape artists in the region. Students were required to do a final drawing for an exhibit hung in Kidder Gallery on the USM Gorham campus.

Leap semester 2017 Fine art 399/499, Creative person's Books , included a 1-week residency in La Napoule, France, over leap suspension.  With attention to content and design, each student was required to create a group of Artist's Books about LaNapoule French republic and the nearby towns. In preparation for the travel week abroad, each student created several artist's books inspired by their inquiry on the history and culture of this region of France. Each educatee traveled with several blank artist'due south books that they prepared for the journeying, developing them during the week at Chateau LaNapoule and beside the Cote d'Azur.  The last project was an Artist'southward Book made after returning to Maine nigh the week in France abreast the Mediterranean.
